I had to let Emma go…

09/21/2008

It was not a good day yesterday and today is not much better.

I knew Emma’s health was failing.  She’s already lived two years longer than we were told she would.  She was so close to the twelve year mark and so I’m thinking, "You go, Emma!  Prove those silly doctors wrong."

Twelve to fifteen years is the average life span for a whippet.

But we’d been coming home to house full of puddles and piles that were only multiplying with each passing day.  Our bedding was beginning to show signs of wear from all the washings.

She was still asking to go out, so I knew there was some control, and she still loved going for little walks about the neighborhood.

Yesterday morning she showed us she just couldn’t go on any longer.  Her life had become too hard.

Her big dark eyes were filled with fear and pleading for me to help her.

Darling husband carried her to the car and the vet tech came out to carry her in.  They were so good to us to wait.  We’d only been clients there for a few months.  You would have thought they’d known Emma since her very first vet visit so many years ago, they were so very good to us and our dear Emma.

The Minnikins was happy to greet us when we came home.  Later I offered her supper in Emma’s bowl.  She was hesitant and I sat beside her.  She began to eat and then finished.

Our bed was so much bigger to sleep in last night without Emma.  Without Emma.

I took this picture of her on Wednesday.

Emma

I miss her badly.  My emmapuppywhippetdog.  She was so sweet and warm.  So soft and loving.

I will miss her badly for a long time.

I am so, so, sorry to hear this. I knew something was wrong from David’s status on FB last night.

If there is anything we can do…

I am sad to read this, as I know from all the years I’ve read your blog how much Emma meant to you. As a animal lover and care giver of numerous dogs, horses and pets in general, ,, I always felt Emma was one of the most beautiful dogs ever, and I sincerely mean that. I too share your loss, May Minnie help your grieving process and bring you smiles once more. You have been an exceptional care giver and lover of Emma,, may she rest in peace.
Hugs to you,
Feather
