I am not the best…

1 June 2012

…doggy mommy.

I let my dogs have nibbles of human food.

Like, if I'm eating a little tub of yogurt and there is nothing left but some trails of yogurt goodness on the sides or the lid?

I take out a little dab on a spoon for the Minikins and then let Lily have the nearly empty tub.

When Lily is done with the tub and it's licked so clean it looks brand new?

The Minikins scarfs the tub and chews it to bits.

The hubby and I both save little bits of our dinner plates for the dogs.

Overall Lily eats about 4 cups of true dog food a day, and Mini eats maybe a half to 2/3's of a cup.

They both get dog cookies whenever they come into the house after being outside a while.

Lily gets 2 or 3 and Mini gets one or a half (I do it by dog size, pholks).

Here's the thing:  When Lily is expecting that tiny bit of human consumption?  She drools puddles on the floor, my knee, or hubby's.  Mini just waits.

Lily even drools in wait if she is several feet away and behind a barrier gate.  Mini still just waits.

All dogs are not created equal.

Because, honestly?  Lily drools all the time…

And that drool is slicker than snot.

Dixie loves to lick my plate when I’m done eating, especially scrambled eggs — or tuna sandwiches – or …  Well,  you get the idea.   She and Mason both love yogurt and since I buy the plain Greek, I always given them fingers full.   But I had to cut down on her cookie treats because she’s a Chihuahua and the vet said she was becoming a Chi-Whopper.  ;)

I feed Harry a moment before I feed Zoe.  Zoe has a puddle of drool on the kitchen floor while she waits for her meal.  Harry slobbers in the car if he’s in the back seat and not the cargo area of the wagon.  It drips down on my arms, my clothes, and sometimes flings into my face (ugh)!  I do give the kids a tiny taste if it’s something yummy, but they only get it in their food bowl after we are finished eating.  I don’t want them to stick their faces on our laps while we have dinner.  They are actually pretty good about that.  (Alex can’t resist slipping them a human treat.  I do resist!)  Hah!

I like that idea of only letting them eat from their bowls..  Hope it’s not too late to begin that habit.

Tonight, while eating some grilled salmon sushi, Lily managed a good ten inches of drool hanging down.  I kept my fingers crossed that she didn’t shake her head before I was able to get it with a paper towel.

      It was a close one!
