That darn cat…

I had a great week!

02/17/2008

Monday morning I come in to find these on my desk with a note from Audra (clik here to see larger view of her workmanship).  At first I was really disappointed that I had missed her visit, but when I read the note I learned she came to see me with the mitties, but didn’t have her new baby with her.  I thought I had missed them both.

Audra used to work in our department, but on campus.  After she had her son and couldn’t find satisfactory child care she decided to stay home with her new munchkin.  It would have been my choice as well.

Audra just began to blog this week and she’s already a very good read.  Welcome her, will ya!

I’m feeling so much better and I think it’s because of the insulin.  Because I’m telling you I feel even so much better than when I had tight control of my diabetes with oral meds.  SO! MUCH! BETTER!  And I’ve not even gotten my morning blood sugars in the normal range yet, but they are so much lower and much closer to normal than I’ve been in months.

In so many ways:

  • The feeling of constant exhaustion is almost nil.  Instead of feeling tired all the time (I don’t mean sleepy, I mean physically t…i…r…e…d) I’ve just begin to feel tired later in the afternoon, about the time I get off from work.  So I’m thinking by the time my fasting blood sugar is in the normal range again I will not feel tired until it’s like time for me to go to bed!
  • My head is clearer.  I’m beginning to think better and more definitively.  I don’t feel bogged down in the head so much anymore.  I actually began clearing up my work area last week!  Because while I’ve always tried to leave my desk tidy before I leave for the day, I’ve really just been leaving it a tidy mess.  Tidy piles of papers and folders, etc., everywhere.
  • The cravings are becoming so few and far between.  I am a carb craver.  I don’t mean candies or chocolate.  I like these and would eat them, but I didn’t feel a compulsion to have them.  I mean bread, potatoes, cereal, mac and cheese, you know — COMFORT FOOD!  I could out eat anyone in these areas.  Although breads have become difficult for me to eat what with my new stomach and all, I could still pretty much put away all the starches with complete abandon.  They funnel through quickly because they are such soft foods.  And these are the very foods that were working against me in my battle with my blood sugar!
  • I’m beginning to just do it!  Instead of procrastinating,  I’m doing stuff!  At work and HOME!  I’m becoming more and more productive every day.  It’s amazing! I’ve not felt like this in years. Years!  YEARS!

Wow!  Who knew insulin would be so much better for me than a cocktail of oral meds.  Here I was down in the dumps about having to give myself shots every day and it turns out they are very nearly painless.  My finger sticks for testing my blood sugars hurt a 100% more than my insulin injections.

I’m sitting here and wondering if maybe I shoulda been on insulin instead of oral meds since I was first diagnosed…

*sigh*

It’s a blustery day outside with a bit of rain here and there.  Blustery days without rain are my favorite kind of weather days, so this is very nearly perfect.

My other son will be caring for Emma and Sophie while we are in Texas.  I was going to ask E, but she’s off in London making big money working on a moobie.  (I also live vicariously through E when it comes to the my adventures in the moobie business these days.)

I’ll sign of now and leave you with a picture of the amazing Sohpie cat:

…with a sore throat. That better be all it is because, DAMMIT, I had my flu shot!

Yesterday we went to Wal-Mart for the BEEF JERKY and came home with a bed for Sophie.

She took to it right away. Guess this bed beats a laundry basket hands down, heh?

So I’m taking pictures of Sophie in her new bed and Emma suddenly jumps up on her our bed and lays down looking all cutified.

I’m thinking some little doggie got a bit jealous that I was taking pictures of her cat and that she was being IGNORED.

Ha!

Of Emma…

emma-on-the-sofa-1.jpg emma-on-the-sofa.jpg

And Sophie…

And hubby’s big 13 double e’s…

hubbys-big-feet.jpg

We had our first home visit Friday. Two social workers came and asked us lots of personal questions and looked over the house—to make sure it would be safe for children.

Hubby and I were both off Friday to run errands and tidy up the house a bit for the visit. We didn’t make an effort for it to be spotless or in perfect shape, just presentable. We figured it we did any more than a normal cleaning it would be like lying! After all, I am not a meticulous housekeeper at all. I just do my best to keep up with what needs to be done.

We did take some boxes that were still in the hallway—that we will have to go through one more time (purge, Purge, PURGE!) and then put away what ever is left. These are what was left after our neighbor, the professional organizer (to the stars!), helped us with a huge purge a few months ago.

Afterwards, hubby and I are sitting at the kitchen table. I’m finishing my supper (didn’t have time to before they arrived) and he’s having a glass of wine. We have no idea how the interview went, only that we are spent from the two weeks anticipation of it and the knowledge there will be one more before we even know if we’re approved.

We talked with them about how we’d like to start with an infant, but that we’d also heard of a 16 year old girl who’s mother doesn’t want her and that we’d seriously consider taking her in. (How could anyone not want to take this girl in!) It would mean a bigger sacrifice on our part right away.

We’d be giving up our office if we took this girl in. With an infant we figure we’ll have at least three years to build an addition off our bedroom for an office, but taking in this young girl would mean an adjustment right now. A big adjustment since we just got into our office this summer after our darling son finally came and got all his stuff…and his little dog, too.

I know it will be difficult for us, but I just can’t stand the idea of this girl being in a shelter.

Can you?

I cleaned our…

bedroom yesterday and decorated my blog for October.

Emma always manages to find a spot to lay around where ever I may be in the house. Sophie has begun to do this a lot, too. While I’m working away at my blog Sophie did this:

That’s our bin for paper recycling. It’s under the table next to my desk in the office.

from-disertation-lady-and-son.jpgSorry. I neglected to update some info with my hosting server and since I’ve been on VACATION and not doing much email checking I DIDN’T KNOW. Plus we had all our computers unhooked, unplugged, and displaced for the last couple of days, too.

We now have a home office. It’s not totally done, but we’re in it…Hubby now sits just a table full of equipment away/beside me. We can now work together, but still each in our own space. We can create, surf, email, and play games in the same room again. It’s delightful!

computeremma.jpgEmma even has a special comfy place to sleep between us—since she must be anywhere that I am. I like having her close by, too. I have a much bigger desk, too. I can even work on my laptop (novel) and my Mac on the same table. My home office RAWKS!

Darling Son left a couple of things behind, but Hubby told me it was stuff he didn’t want. We’ll be adding it to the next Goodwill donation I’m sure. Goodwill either loves us or hates us by now.

sofasophie2.jpgSophie managed to get out while Son was loading up the U-Haul. I was so angry! We couldn’t catch her, but she did show up at the back door a few hours later, still I was really pissed and worried.

Now that we’ve gotten rid of so much stuff there aren’t as many hiding places for Sophie in the house any more—not that she seems to mind. She now has many more comfy places to sleep without fear of a box avalanche upon her.

There is still so much to do, but I feel less stressed from it anymore. Soon the place will be clean, neat, orderly, and there will be pictures and such on the walls. Our house will truly be our home—and then we’ll have to decide on paint colors (inside and out) but that’s an expense we can’t deal with until next year.

Today we were reassured that we don’t have termites or silverfish, but we do have black widows spiders and centipedes. I didn’t know about the spiders until the Terminix guy (Who looked amazingly like Richard Gere!) opened the access to our crawl space and a few of them scrambled out of the way. I’d seen a centipede in the bathroom and killed it dead, but I thought it was a silverfish till the Terminix guys set me straight. It was a horrid and scary looking pest. Ach. We’ll be getting $prayed for these soon.

darlingsonandgirlfriend.jpgThe house has been a lot quieter without Gracie about. I’ve heard from my son that they’ve had to muzzle her and his girlfriend’s PIT BULL, Axl. They aren’t getting along too well. Son and girlfriend will be moving into their own aparment in a couple of weeks. Axl can’t come as he is over the weight limit of the complex they are moving in to. Gracie didn’t seem to mind driving away from us Saturday morning. I wonder if she misses us or realizes she is finally home with her boy.

On a side note: I’ve now lost a total of 33 lbs!

lots-o-liquor.jpgwith music, food, and fun.

Friday evening was a send-off party they have via my husband’s office EVERY YEAR and IT IS ALWAYS FUN. It was still fun and the food was great, but there was no liquor. Only water, sodas, and beer. NOT EVEN ANY WINE. Wine would have been good.

I don’t know why they changed it this year, unless it had to do with the change of venue, too (which was terrific even when it got a bit chilly). I really like going to this gig as the awards ceremony is always such a hoot. Yeah, the docs are getting real awards, certificates, and such; but they also get these gag awards.

I haven’t had a drink in nearly 4 weeks. I was so thirsty for a heavy margarita.

They had the same band as last summer. I think they’re called “Face to Face.” They are awesome. The lead female was at another gig, but I didn’t miss her. The sax was all good.

E came over yesterday and helped me again with my purging. She is so good at what she does (professional organizer is another one of her many talents). It amazes me with what she can get Hubby and I to accomplish in such record times. Amazing.

Once my darling son leaves with all his stuff (which I hope he will also purge like crazy) my house should be totally on its way to that sparse charm I am so looking forward to.

Today I go see the docs that did my surgery. I’ve got some weird and HUGE swelling on my abdomen. Bigger than the span of my husband’s hand—and he has really BIG hands. I called the on-call doc Saturday as Hubby and I were thinking that it looks and feels an awful like like a hernia (I’ve had one before recall), but they seemed to think it was some not unexpected fluid sac caused by the port and that I shouldn’t worry—except to come in first thing Monday morning (unless I got worse and had a fever).

And I’m kinda annoyed about it. This happens sometimes, but it wasn’t mentioned in any of the papers they gave me or discussed in any of the meetings I attended? It didn’t make any sense that they would leave this out since it happens sometimes. You should read the list of stuff they did tell us about.

I’ve been up since 2am. Fretting I guess. Idunno.

SOPHIE is a changed cat. She has not asked to go out once, she hasn’t even tried to go out on the sly. She is still a bit exhausted from her ordeal. We’ll never know what happened to her. She’s eating, drinking, and voiding like a proper cat. She sleeps on my hip every night, even being patient with me while I’ll switch sides. And she likes being held more. This is not the old Sophie. The old Sophie was not even half this loving and cuddly. I love the new Sophie even more.
