When I feel AWESOME!

…using my new MAC Book!

It arrived via Fed Ex to my office Friday.  I took it out of the box immediately!  My workmates joined me to watch the welcome screen and to ooh and ahh over my Mac book’s over all awesomeness.

At home, E came over to bask in its glory, and my darling hubby was soon home to do the initial set up.  I mighta coulda done it, but why take that pleasure from him.  He is an IT guy you, know!

It is just so beautiful!  I took mucho pictures with my cell phone and I hope to have them up on flickr tomorrow.

I am just so tired!  I’ve been finishing with the moving of things from the old G4 hard drive to the external that is now hooked up to my Mac book.  I also began sorting through the slew of stuff I’ve managed to accumulate on that external HD — but only managed to chip at the iceburg of a chore.

*sigh*

I’m just so excited.  This is my very own first brand new computer.  Since my hubby is the computer geek we’ve always gotten new computers for him and then I would take the hand-me-downs.  I was glad to get them because it meant we didn’t have to fight over computer time!

Hubby’s old Dell crashed the week before Thanksgiving and we got him a new one that week.  They had an awesome "black Friday" sale and we took full advantage of it, but for my new ‘puter we had to take out a loan.  Ouch.  I was surprised we even qualified in the wake of these economic times, but I had to try!  Like I’d posted earlier, the old girl was on her way out and I couldn’t handle dealing with another crash after hubby’s.

My new Adobe Web Suite will be arriving next week.  Oh what fun I’m going to have with the updated versions of all my old software, too!

I’ve decided to name my new Mac book Sylvia — because of the lovely silver color of her aluminum case.  It was E that moved me to name her!

No lie!  I’m pooped and on my way to bed.  I just couldn’t wait any longer to post using my new Mac!

The Mikado…

10/21/2008

So a couple of weeks ago I was at my husband’s place of employment (because I can’t see properly and needed an eye exam badly) and while visiting his boss I noticed this really cool little plant on her desk.

It looked so futuristic and some what minimal, too.  It also reminded me of old hat pins in a holder.  Not that I’m old enough to have used such things.  It’s just another one of "those" items that float in the image files of my brain.

I am just all over this little plant in her office and then I read the card and discover it is called a "mikado" and I’m immediately reminded of my high school’s production of "The Mikado!"  It was the most fun of all the productions I was involved in during that time of my life.  I can still hear Laura’s voice and see Chris’ dancing!

And my hubby’s boss gives me the plant.  Just Like That!  And she is saying something "like," while it was a thoughtful gesture from the person who gave it to her, it really wasn’t her taste and she was sure she would kill it because she is more of an outside gardener than in.

I brought it to work and put it on my desk just in the little gold container it came in (a conventional, but plastic, clay looking pot was inside the outer gold plastic pot).  Yesterday hubby and I were were at Target and looking for a bowl and some rocks to place it upon — as per the instructions!  I didn’t want to rush into buying anything for the plant until I was sure I wouldn’t kill it either.

And now this is on my desk at work:

mikado         midado

Nice, eh?

And then also while I’m blogging this AT WORK, but on my lunch hour, this finally arrived:

pop up book kit

I’ve already checked it out thoroughly and I’m certain that I will be making these books for myself.  Now I will be able to make a pop-up book from scratch after making these!

Isn’t this lovely?

lovely large mug

I picked it up at Target yesterday, too.  It is now my official at-the-office coffee mug.  It is just so pretty!  And it holds a whopping 16 ounces of delicious coffee!  They also had them in purple and red!

Don’t you love it when you’re at work and someone sends you a joke via email that makes you put your head on your desk to laugh and laugh ’cause you just weren’t expecting it:

A man breaks into a house to look for money and guns.  Inside, he finds a couple in bed.  He orders the guy out of bed and ties him to a chair.  While tying the homeowner’s wife to the bed the convict gets on top of her, kisses her neck, then gets up and goes into the bathroom.

While he’s in there, the husband whispers over to his wife,

"Listen, this guy is an escaped convict.  Look at his clothes!  He’s probably spent a lot of time in jail and hasn’t seen a woman in years.  I saw how he kissed your neck.  If he wants sex, don’t resist, don’t complain:  do whatever he tells you.  Satisfy him no matter how much he nauseates you.  The guy is obviously very dangerous. If he gets angry, he’ll kill us both.  Be strong, honey, I love you!"

His wife responds,

"He wasn’t kissing my neck. He was whispering in my ear.  He told me he was gay, thinks you’re cute, and asked if we had any Vaseline. I told him it was in the bathroom.  Be strong, honey. I love you, too!"

Yeah, I know.  Totally not PC, but so damn funny — so bite me.

And on another note:  Will this come out the way you’re already leaning?

UPDATE:   01 Dec 08; The Mikado bit it.  I tried to save over the Thanksgiving weekend, but it was too far gone.  I’m looking for another.  They’re just too cool looking not to try again.  *sigh*

awesome zit...

What?  You thought I was kidding?

same

It really is a great hair cut.  I took these today, but I got the hair cut on Thursday.  This is two days later and I’ve not washed, styled it, or anything.  Hell, look how crooked that part is!  This is after sleeping on it for two nights.  It’s a bit flat, but still very presentable.

Wow.  I just realized I have FABULOUS BED HAIR.  Awesome, heh?  And did you notice how much thinner my face AND NECK are getting!  Even with the wonky angle I had for this photo!

Tomorrow E will be coming over for morning coffee and we got these to surprise her.  I know she will totally get them and then we’ll order a set for her … or give her ours in case she can’t wait …

and another I am not a paper cup

I also ordered this a couple of weeks ago.

I am not a paper cup....

It’s very handy at work when I have to leave the office, but I’m still drinking my coffee…  Already a workmate is getting herself one.  Be sure to shop around for these — prices vary all over the internet.  I got the best deal I could find, but maybe you can do better (and buy me another one!).

For drinking and carrying my water I usually just keep refilling the same old AquaFina bottle and replacing it as it would get too grody for cleaning any longer — or I just effing lost/left the damn bottle somewhere.  But I’m reading how these plastic bottles shouldn’t be reused or to drink from them at all if they’ve been in the heat — guess where I’d leave mine  A LOT:  The car.  Crap.

I didn’t feel guilty about buying the occasional bottle because I would use them forever, you know.  I had no landfill guilt because I’d throw them in the recycling bin whenever I could.  Then I broke down and ordered one of these.   The one on the right …

You buy one and week later someone gives you one...

I’ve been hemmin’ and hawin’ over this decision for some time.  And then a week after I get it a workmate gives me one she got at a conference for free (the one on the left)!  But it’s all good.  Hubby decided he would utilize the freebie instead of us buying him one like mine.  I chose mine specifically because it holds 32 ounces.  And the top is attached by that cordage.  Neither are insulated, but hey, I’ll drink warm water when I’m parched.  It’s still water.

Hell, even Emma could tell  you that!

Emma on her bed

And now for the coolest news of all:  At Classmates. com I came across the profile of a guy I went to high school with.  Someone I’d not seen or heard of in nearly thirty years.  And she is still in better physical shape than me!  How awesome it that!

First of all NO MIGRAINE!

Monday was a bit stressful at work because I got some work passed on to me just because somebody else didn’t want to do it.  I got a bit pissed at first, but then just took it in stride.  I’m up for a promotion and the little things like this (accepted with the proper attitude) can only help solidify that deal.

On Tuesday I offered up the Saucy Barmaid (my Russian tea cozy) to my dear Wendy:

saucy barmaid

Wendy fell in love with her as easily as I did when I first received her almost thirty years ago.

I had made friends with this couple that had immigrated out of Russia via Israel — that I met when I was a kid working at K-Mart!  A couple of years into that friendship the mother of the wife sent this tea cozy to them to be given to me.  It was only one of a few lovely things the Kogan’s had given me from their homeland.  Eventually they moved to Washington state (after both of our children were born) and I’ve lost track of them.

If you’ve been following this blog at all then you know that I am trying to pare down on the amount of stuff I live with (working towards that whole sparse effect also known as minimalism) and the Saucy Barmaid is just one of the treasures I am parting with by finding these things good homes.  So now she is going to new home where she will be much loved.  Keep watch for her new adventures at Wendy’s blog, "The Daily Puppet."

On Wednesday a colleague brought her baby girl over to visit with me:

office visitor     office visitor

I got to have her to myself for a little while and I think that may be how the knees at her pants got dirty.  She’s crawling and we did a lot of exploring together.  Looks like the office carpet hasn’t been cleaned in a long while.  Oh, yeah, and then we played blocks!

On Thursday I got a new client for my little work at home business!  And one of my previous clients has come back for more of my work!  That Mac Book Pro is closer to becoming mine!

And I learned that we had a three day weekend coming up, too!

Friday was the most amazing day!

To begin with it was a workmate’s birthday coming up and so that meant cake!  Cup cakes!  Delicious cup cakes!  With pinwheels!

pinwheel cupcake!

And the little pinwheels totally worked!

On Friday I received an email notice from BlogHer that I had won a prize!  And I’m still entered to win another!  These are so cool.  I don’t know whether I’ll give mine away or PLAY WITH IT MYSELF!  It looks like so much fun — even to me — a 47 year old fat lady!

Then later that afternoon I discovered the whereabouts of a childhood friend.  I haven’t decided if I will contact her, but I did find out all kinds of up-to-date stuff about her that was really cool (except that her dad had passed away in July).  My best memories of her brings on such warm moments.  I dunno.  It may just be best to leave her alone.

*sigh*

Sophie was very happy to greet me when I got home on Friday afternoon, too!  Even if she did make it a bit difficult to snap some pictures of her with my cell phone:

The weekend ahead looks just as lovely!

… with a migraine from the depths of hell and everything was crap again.

OMG!

It started Tuesday afternoon at work.  Initially I thought it was just going to be a regular headache and then BOOM!

It’s still dissipating, but I feel so much better than each day before.

922-10089-ice-bag-closed

I hate them.  I hate the way they move around my head like a legion of small pests brain freezing, twisting, and squeezing in my poor head.  I hate the way they come and go and how just when you think the ordeal is over they are back with a vengeance.

I take OTC and prescribed meds, but I think they just help me to get some sleep during the episode.  The entire assault is very exhausting.   I am completely wrung out in the end.

I also counter with moving an ice bag all about my head.   For some crazy reason this helps until the pain moves or the ice melts.  Sometimes it just helps to lay it across the back of my neck which is weird because the pain is on my head not my neck.

If I could find an ice bag disguised as a hat I could prolly manage to function in the public with out anyone really noticing the ice bag on my head.  The whole ace bandage thing is just too comical to wear out in public.

I really wish I knew what brought them back.  I’d gone with out them for some time until last fall.  WTF happened?

What is different?

Can a person cut off their own head?

…even if I do have some very fond memories of fun in a great summer shower.

When I first began this post this morning I thought the rain was gonna ruin the 4th of July parade.  Ha ha!  That didn't happen.  So Emma, Minnie, and I prepared for the parade.  Clicking on this photo (courtesy of my Hubby) will take you to a slide show.

Ready to go to staging

We made it down to Third Street Stuff just in time to begin the walk to the staging area.  Turns out I read the instructions wrong.  Pholks from the Martin Luther King Neighborhood were to meet at noon to decorate and then at one pm walk on over to our staging spot on Midland Avenue.  I was given a nice bunch of paper flowers to drape around my basket for added decoration.  Then I put the bandanas (I'd orginally brought to hang off the basket) on Emma and Minhttp://photos.kimmerer.com/Bahai/Lexingtons-July-4-Parade-2008/July4Parade08-5581/325624135_RMg9D-XL.jpgnie.  Clicking this photo will take you to one of the many TOPSinLEX slide shows by photographer Alex Orlov.

Tom Kimmerer also got a some shots of me and the pups.  Click on this pic with Minnie showing some attitude for his slide show of the parade et al!

Why all these pictures of me, Me, ME?  Because I did this all alone.  I received an email that the Martin Luther King Neighborhood was needing pholks to walk with our banner in the parade, and I thought, "Gee, wouldn't it be fun if I rode my bike with Minnie in the basket and Emma on her springer jogger in the parade?"  And so the fat lady got out in true public form and just enjoyed herself!  The Darling Hubby stayed home.

I was already feeling the heat and glistening with sweat by the time we arrived to our marked spot on the pavement.  A couple of ladies asked me if I was okay, so I knew my face had become its customary red from exercise.  It always does that and can last for hours.  After a good workout at the gym it's even more flushed.

…I also get the same flush from wine.  Go figure.

I watered the pups a second and third time as we were waiting for the parade to start.  We were 45 minutes early.  Lots of people came to chat me up about the dogs and Emma's bicycle attachment.  And it was then that most of these pictures were taken.  The doggies were just so popular!  I was quite proud of them and so glad I got off my fat ass to join the fun instead of just staying home.

Our group walked behind a float of mothers representing their children who were serving in Iraq.  Their float was met with much applause, but I wish more people had stood up when they went past.  Wars are no longer popular with the general public as they were in the past (Thank God!) but that shouldn't detract from any show of respect when such an opportunity arises.

The crowd in attendance was just awesome.  I couldn't remember ever seeing this many people at a parade while we lived in the delux apartment in the skyyyyyy!  Maybe it was the better weather that brought everyone one out.  Idunno.

You gotta love it when you're just walking along in a parade, minding your own business, and you hear your name yelled over the din of the event.  You turn see a couple of (MALE) colleagues waving at you.  You're all smiles and waving back until one of them hollers;

"You need more dogs!"

"Go back to work," you yell over to them and proceed without looking back.

It was well after three o'clock when I and the pups were finally headed home.  It had been a very humid event because of all the recent rain, but the temperature was low enough to make it bearable.  And most importantly?  The asphalt was cool enough for Emma to have been able to stand and/or walk upon it for more than two hours.  I knew Minnie would be okay in the basket (She loves riding in my basket and gets really disappointed when I reach for my helmet and then leave the house without her.) but I worried about Emma's pads.  It turned out to be perfect weather for letting a dog walk along side your bike in a parade!

Emma had not been on her springer jogger since we moved into this house over three years ago, but she still knew how it worked!

A Happy Camper…

06/17/2008

Today I rode my bike to the gym.  It was glorious.  I haven’t been to the gym in over two weeks.  I had too much going on at work and had to be there by 8 am many mornings instead of my usual 9.  I only had about 40 minutes to work out, but I made the most of it.

I’ve been riding my bike to work and campus a lot the past couple of weeks so I didn’t feel too badly about not going to the gym.  It’s just that I really like "working out" and I missed it.  I know it is because I do work out that I am able to just get on my bike and go anywhere.  I want to keep that ability until I die.

Yesterday I power walked to work (had to leave my bike at the office Friday because of raging thunderstorms) and by afternoon I was having severe charlie horses in my shins.  Shin charlie horses are worse than calf ones, I swear!  My left heel is bothering me, too.  Much like that time I did too much walking in my "party shoes."  I hope it subsides on its own soon.  Those tendonitis exercises are such a pain.  I’m thinking a person of my size should not be walking so hard.  Walking at a moderate speed does not have the same affect on my body.  But, hey!  My knees didn’t seem to mind at all!

This morning Number One gave me some awesome news!  Drew Curtis is going to speak at the Lexington Venture Club meeting this summer!!!  I’ve been pestering Number One to invite him for a very long time.  Woot!
